What is NuShul?

NuShul is a new space for Jewish communal experience, spirituality, prayer and gathering. Respectfully non-denominational, NuShul brings us together, in person, to share familiar liturgy and music, lifecycle celebrations, holidays and memorials, and to explore the how and why of Jewish practice.

Why?

In an era that calls for change, Jewish community life is calling for a reinvigorated and reimagined spirit. The time is ripe to combine traditional wisdom with forward thinking programming.

For Whom?

NuShul is for individuals seeking deeper meaning, for anyone looking to be re-enchanted with Judaism, for couples creating their own path, for parents who wish to see their families grow together and for their children who we hope will love what we have come to cherish; and for those eager to learn and develop new ways of living Jewishly within a loving, welcoming and inclusive community.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is NuShul a synagogue?

The word ‘synagogue’ conjures different things for different people. We choose not to use the word to underscore that we are creating something new. NuShul is a Judaism refresh. It’s a Jewish community space that offers timeless programs, like high holiday services, in a creative and contemporary way that allows people from all walks of life to connect with Judaism in their own way.

Will I be attending programming in person?

YES!

If I'm used to traditional services, will I feel at home at NuShul?

NuShul holiday programs are built upon the arc of traditional services, and will include familiar liturgy and music, and segments to allow for deeper understanding and resonance no matter what kind of service one is used to.

Where exactly will programming take place?
The programing will take place in Toronto. The exact location will be announced later in the year.
Is the location accessible for people with special needs?

    Yes!

Are the Shabbat Festival weekends held locally?

Shabbat Festival weekends will be scheduled so you can plan to attend well in advance of the chosen dates. They will take place at various locations throughout the year. The program is designed modularly, with something in mind for everyone. Community members can attend whichever elements resonate most.

Is the membership fee tax deductible?

    Yes.

    Is there parking available?

Yes, and we will have an attendant on duty to direct traffic.

Will there be a children's program?

For children 6-11, we will offer a supervised program space. A space will also be provided for parents with children 5 and under if a break from the service is required – this will not be a supervised (by us) space.
