“We received the Torah in this month. This month brought us a very big gift, and now that we have it, there’s a question of: where does it lead us to?”— Bluth
Welcome to Sivan, a time of ripening and movement! This episode of the Living Jewishly podcast is an instalment of Scared Time, a podcast that explores the healing art of the Jewish calendar. It revisits last year’s episode dedicated to the month of Sivan, its themes and symbols, and how they relate to our lives today.
The holiday of Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, is an important holiday early on in the month of Sivan that marks the end of the Counting of Omer and commemorates the day that the Jewish people first received the Torah at Mount Sinai.
Once we receive the gift of the Torah, we must decide how and where we move forward.
In a time when many are sensitive to their privilege, it can be difficult to know how to receive gifts, both material and spiritual. Abundance can come with a feeling of shame or guilt — how can we appreciate what we have in a world with such an unequal distribution of resources? And what steps can we take toward creating a better outcome for our communities?
This episode explores these questions and more, helping us to map our paths in this month of movement.
“Power is the ability to choose and then to follow through — to act on that choice. If we have the ability to act but we don’t actually have the ability to choose… that’s not real power.”— Ganga Devi
This episode discusses:
- How we may move forward sustainably and intentionally with the material and spiritual gifts that we receive
